NDA presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu arrived in the capital from Bhubaneswar on Thursday, the day before she filed her candidacy for the post. Documents for her nomination are being prepared at the residence of Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, sources said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, and BJP President J.P. Naddah will be among her proposals. Union ministers and senior BJP leaders sign as initiators and assistants at Joshi’s residence. Susmit Patra of the BJD, whose party supported her candidacy, was also among those who were at Joshi’s house to sign the paperwork.
Most likely, she will nominate her candidacy in the presence of top party leaders. Murmu, who was met by BJP leaders at the airport, stayed at the Odisha Bhavan Hotel. Most likely, she will call the prime minister.
In a brief statement released before leaving for the country’s capital, Murmu said: “I thank everyone and ask everyone for cooperation during the presidential elections. I will meet with all voters (legislators) and ask for their support before July 18.” If elected, she would become India’s first tribal president and the second woman to hold the post.
