India rises two places to 104 in FIFA rankings

The Indian football team has reaped a good harvest from its impressive Asian Cup qualifying campaign as it took two places and jumped to 104th place in the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday. The Blue Tigers are just below New Zealand (103) which missed out on a spot for the 2022 World Cup after losing 0-1 to Costa Rica in the intercontinental play-off earlier this month.

However, India’s ranking among the members of the Asian Football Confederation remained stable at 19th place. The Sunil Chhetri-led squad delivered their best ever Asian Cup qualifying campaign as they won all three league matches in top group D earlier this month and secured a place in the 24-team final to be held in 2023.

This was India’s fifth overall qualifier in the competition and the first time in their history that they managed to achieve a back-to-back qualifier in the Asian Cups.

In the overall world ranking, Iran retained the first place among the AFC countries (23). Brazil remained in the lead, three months after the first place of Belgium (2nd). Argentina jumped one place to third at the expense of France (4th) who paid the price for four winless games in the UEFA Nations League. England, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark complete the top 10. The next FIFA world ranking will be released on August 25.
